Steve BrotherwoodHereford United Futsal Scholars attended The Football League Trust Opening Festival this week.
Futsal Coach Steve Brotherwood informed the Official Hereford United Website on how they got on.
Having taken part in only two practical training sessions before the festival, the boys gave some exceptional performances to finish with three wins, one draw and just one defeat from five games in what was their first competitive outing as a Futsal team.
A convincing 3-0 defeat of Notts County gave the team a solid platform to build on throughout the day, with Perry Reason finishing off two superb teams moves as Hereford dominated from start to finish.
The second game saw Hereford take on a strong Crystal Palace team and come away with a 2-2 draw. Trailing 2-1 with only seconds left on the clock, Luke Griffiths scored the goal of the day as he raced clear on the left hand side to superbly lob the onrushing keeper and secure a well earned point right on the buzzer from a highly entertaining encounter.
The entertainment didn't stop there, however. The next match saw Hereford take on Crewe Alexandra, who had won three out of three coming into the game. Crewe raced into a 2-0 lead after only four minutes with some quick interplay and fine finishing, leaving the boys wondering what had hit them.
But the team weren't done there. Hereford dominated from then on and rallied to level the scores with two minutes remaining, before Ryan Newton finished off some more fine work from Griffiths and Connor Gorman to spark wild celebrations among the rest of the playing squad, clearly delighted by victory from 2-0 down against a well organised Crewe team.
Port Vale were the next opponents, who struggled from the outset to stem the flow of quick, flowing attacks that the boys were producing. Josh Price, Daniel Homola and Blake Ward all grabbed a goal apiece in a relentless 4-0 demolition.
A long wait then ensued before they final game of the day against Chesterfield. Despite taking an early lead in the game, the Bulls never really got going and failed to hold the lead, finishing with a 3-1 defeat.
On the whole, a very promising day for the squad who can take great heart and confidence from their performances against some very organised teams.
The hard work has only just begun for the squad, with the league beginning on October 3rd. They will be training at ThePoint4 arena for eight hours per week as they prepare for the opening round of fixtures against some big Football League clubs such as Watford, Bristol City, Derby County and MK Dons.
Hereford United Futsal are the only club from outside of the Football League to be competing, with the remaining 49 teams all being associated to Football League clubs, along with Premier Division outfits West Bromwich Albion and Reading.
Squad: Kairon Watkins, Luke Griffiths, Connor Gorman, Liam Edwards, Perry Reason, Ryan Newton, Josh Price, Blake Ward, Charlie Crane, Chris Rees, Daniel Homola, Rhys Williams, Sophie Nicholas, Naomi Waugh.
