Manila Standard TodayICTSI clinches futsal cup titleSeptember 02, 2012Football is the world’s most popular sport. Unlike basketball which gives an advantage to taller players football is a sport where Filipinos of average height can compete on even terms against six-footers. It is no doubt the fastest growing sport in the country and is supported by the public and big corporations.
To spur the growth of the sport even more futsal tournaments, or indoor football played in basketball courts, are held regularly and participated in by dedicated supporters of football.
Port operator International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI) clinched the championship in the 3rd Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) Futsal Cup held recently at the MVA Gym at Magallanes Village, Makati City. The team scored eight goals in the championship game to clinch the title. ICTSI was coached by Arthur Tabuena and included a player from Campos Lanuza & Co.
On the other hand, PSE Team A (Red) which also included a player from the Securities Clearing Corporation of the Philippines, claimed first runner up honors.
ICTSI clinched three out of four special awards. Mickael Cardos was awarded Most Valuable Player and Most Goals after scoring 12 goals in the tournament. Teammate Juan Carlos Golez was named Best Goalkeeper.
In the consolation game, the composite team of PSE Team B with representatives from the Capital Markets Integrity Corporation, I. Ackerman & Co. Inc., and Manila Electric Company squared off against Petron Corporation. Petron clinched third place with Knight Cenarosa winning the Best Defender award.
The PSE Futsal Cup, now on its third year, featured 84 players from various teams. They were mostly stock brokers and representatives of publicly-listed firms.
Showcasing their football skills at the 3rd PSE Futsal Cup are the teams from ICTSI, Petron; Sunlife Financial Inc.; PLDT-Smart Communications; the PSE teams A and B (which included representatives from Capital Markets Integrity Corporation, Securities Clearing Corporation of the Philippines, I. Ackerman & Company Inc. and Manila Electric Company); and Maybank ATR-Kim Eng Securities Inc. (which included representatives from UBS Securities Phils. Inc. and CLSA Philippines, Inc.).
