Futsal National Squad to inspire Futsal at the Grassroots On Sunday 2nd September a landmark occasion in Welsh football will take place with Wales competing in their first ever full International Futsal fixture against Andorra.
Futsal is the official version of 5 a side football recognised by FIFA UEFA and the Football Association of Wales and grass roots players have been trying Futsal over the past eighteen months across the country and more structured Futsal is starting to be established within Wales.
Futsal Development Officer Richard Gunney commented “With the new football season under way and fresh from the euphoria of the Olympics this is a very positive moment in Welsh football. With the National Futsal team now competing in International fixtures it will raise the awareness of Futsal for the grassroots and inspire players and coaches to play the game. Futsal is just a smaller version of football and is fun and exciting for young players. It is also another great development tool in the armoury to support coaches. A number of players will be playing Futsal across Wales this coming season especially during the winter months and hopefully the National squad can help encourage even more players to take part”
Wales will play two fixtures against Andorra with the Games taking place on the 2nd and 3rd of September at the home of Andorra Futsal Pavelló Prat Gran (Escaldes-Engordany).
A talented squad has been assembled many of whom are playing semi professional football and are now combining Futsal with their football careers. The squad will have to develop quickly and catch up on other nations who have been playing Futsal Internationally for a number of years. The Welsh squad are preparing for the UEFA Futsal EURO qualifiers which will take place in January 2013 and their first home International fixture which will be played later in 2013.
