MTUC PENANG CHALLENGE TROPHY: Headshot gunned down in final

PRAI: BILLA FC defeated Headshot 'B' by a solitary goal to win the Malaysian Trades Union Congress futsal tournament at the MegaMall Pinang Futsal Courts here recently.

A goal in the early minutes of the final by N. Yuganesan was enough for the Billa FC team, led by MTUC Penang treasurer and Metal Industry Employees Union senior industrial relations officer V. Vijayan, to lift the MTUC Penang challenge trophy.

The team, comprising industry workers, defeated newcomers Headshot 'B' to take back a trophy, medals, a Milo hamper worth RM100 and RM500 cash.

The Headshot 'B' team, in finishing second, received a trophy, medals, Milo hamper worth RM100 and RM300 cash prize.

The two losing semifinalists, Malayan Sugar Manufacturing 'B' and Southern Steel, collected medals, hamper worth RM100 and RM200 cash prize.

The tournament, which attracted 24 teams, was organised by the Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC), Penang division in conjunction with Workers Day celebrations.

MTUC Penang division chairman S. Ravindran said he was happy with the response received for the event.

And for next year, the division plans to start preparation early to attract more teams.

He said though two other futsal tournaments were hosted on the same day in Butterworth, and offering bigger cash prizes, the entries for the MTUC tournament were encouraging.

He said the organisers intend to increase the cash prize money for next year.

"Normally, we would organise a solidarity walk in conjunction with Workers' Day, but decided to start hosting the futsal championship two years ago due to requests from our affiliates.

"We will also be hosting a tenpin bowling championships, a sepak takraw tournament, a treasure hunt and a few other indoor games, including carom and darts."

Ravindran, who is also the Penang Municipal Council Services Union president, said on April 28, the division held the annual Workers Memorial Day, themed "Mourn for the dead, Fight for the living", at the Penang Bridge Memorial Monument near the bridge toll plaza.

A Workers Solidarity Dinner at the Chai Leng Park Multipurpose Hall was also held on May 1.

The former national vice-president of MTUC said all the events were part of the state MTUC's Workers Day celebrations.

MTUC also plans to organise activities for female workers, especially for those in the electronics industry sector.

RESULTS -- Semi-finals: Billa FC 1 Malayan Sugar Manufacturing B 0; Headshot B 2 Southern Steel 2.

Final: Billa FC 1 Headshot B 0.
