TOMORROW at the Campos Stadium in Lagos Island, six teams from the education districts across the state will feature in the final of the Lagos U-15 Futsal Championship.
According to the co-ordinator of the tourney, Roger Appleby, the competition is meant to unearth talented players to form the state’s elite squad. For the final, District One has a team from Agege, while districts two, three, four, five and six have more than two teams. The play-off holds in the morning before the grand finale later in the afternoon.
From District Two, teams from Ikorodu and Bariga will square up in the play-off, in District Three, Epe, Eti Osa and Ibeju Lekki will jostle for the sole slot, while Surulere and Mainland will compete for the single spot in District Four.
For District Five, Badagry, Ojo, Amuwo/Odofin and Ajeromi/Ifelodun will jostle for a slot, while Ikeja, Mushin, Oshodi and Isolo will compete in District Six play-off.
According to Appleby, who is also the football consultant for Lagos State, “the real background to this competition was one of my briefs as football consultant and it was to form a database of talented players across the state as well as find how best to discover talented players at U-15 age group to eventually form an elite squad for the state.
“The main objective is to discover approximately 300 players, 50 from each of the six education districts.”
For him, the gain of the tournament is that it is a competition throughout the six education districts of Lagos. Over 207 teams featured in the competition at the zonal stage with over 1,242 students.
