(Roselyn B. Monroyo) The 2012 Saipan Soccer School Summer Futsal League returned to action at the TSL Sports Complex in Gualo Rai last Saturday with three teams adding wins to their credit.
The summer league resumed with two matches in the women's division and one game in the men's group. The competition took a weeklong break to give way to the EAFF Asian Cup 2013 Preliminary Competition Round 1 at the Leo Palace in Guam.
In the first women's division tiff, Shirley's Coffee Shop edged Baked Girls, 2-1, while Xerox also had a close win over Wild Bill's in the second match.
Geraldine Castillo nailed the pair of goals for Shirley's Coffee Shop, making them all in the second half, while Anne Padilla scored the lone goal for Baked Girls.
In the second women's game, Xerox drew goals from four different players to slip past Wild Bill's. Manami Todokoro, Temary Gramlich, and Patricia Coleman broke into the scoreboard in the first half, while Xerox's only goal in the second half was courtesy of Natalie Hill.
Wild Bill's only earned one goal in the first half with Goldie Aque finding the back of the net and the team fell short of forcing a draw despite getting two goals from Pratoom Stoffer in the second half.
With Xerox beating Wild Bill's, the former took the solo lead in the six-team field. Xerox improved to a 5-1-1 win-draw-loss record, ahead of Shirley's (4-1-1) and Wild Bill's (3-2-1). Rounding out the standings are Baked Girls (2-1-3), IT&E Awesome (1-0-4), and Mellow Yellow (0-1-5).
Xerox is also on top of the goals scored race with its 38, followed by Shirley's (26), Wild Bill's (17), Baked Girls (14), Mellow Yellow (10), and IT&E Awesome (7).
Meanwhile, Godfather's won the lone game played last Saturday, routing Shirley's, 20-8.
Steve McKagan, who returned from a stint with the CNMI Men's Team in the EAFF qualifier, made his presence felt in the league, sizzling for 10 goals. Peter Houk added four, Ropati Tonuu chipped in three, and David Duenas contributed a pair in Godfather's lopsided victory.
Taro Goto led Shirley's with his four goals, while Jack Phan and Ariel Jinang tallied three and one, respectively.
With the easy win, Godfather's improved to a 4-0-1 slate and kept pace with the league-leading Wild Bill's (4-0-0). Shirley's Coffee Shop dropped to a 1-0-3 card. IT&E (1-0-2) and Go Green (0-0-4) complete the field.
Besides the men's and women's divisions, this season's futsal league also features games in the boys U18 and U14. Astig Futsal leads the U18 group with its perfect 3-0-0 card, while Astig Futsal and IT&E are tied in the U14, drawing their first two matches in the league.
