GLT, AAR implementation discussed

Sunday, 15 July 2012

Kuala Lumpur: The AFC Referees Committee met on Sunday at AFC House and discussed the implications of the recent approval by IFAB (International Football Association Board) of the goal-line technology (GLT) and the use of additional assistant referees (AAR) on football in Asia.

After discussing the GLT and AAR in depth, and the feasibility of implementing the two systems, the committee, which met under the chairmanship of Thailand’s Dato’ Worawi Makudi, decided it would be best to consult FIFA for clearer guidelines on deploying GLT and AAR.

AFC was one of the first confederations to try out the AAR system during the AFC President’s Cup finals in the 2010 edition in Yangon, Myanmar.

In his opening remarks, Dato’ Worawi welcomed the members and asked them to work together for the development of Asian referees.

“We are in the middle of the year and have seen many incidents and issues during the matches played since we last met in March this year," said Dato' Worawi. “I would like to ask the members to work hand-in-hand for the improvement of our referees.”

The committee decided to re-instate as per 2011 the quota of FIFA Referees and Assistant Referees for Member Associations whose quota was reduced in 2012 and maintain the quota of Member Associations whose quota was increased in 2012 for the next two years.

The committee also approved a strategic Referees Development Plan, which will be implemented from next year.

A two-year development programme for Elite Women Referees and Elite Futsal Referees will also be activated. The committee also approved an award for the Outstanding Futsal Referee of the Year 2012 to be presented next year.

All the decisions of this committee need to be ratified by the AFC Executive Committee to take effect.
