Guam - The Paintco Strykers “A” team gave everything they had defensively in the final 11 minutes of play to hold down Guam Shipyard and narrowly escape with a 3-2 win in an IT&E Men’s Futsal League match yesterday at the Guam Sports Complex gym.

With the high energy match knotted at 1-all going into the second half, key saves by the Strykers “A” team goalkeeper J.R. Campos combined with Paintco’s passing game frustrated the aggressive Shipyard team.

The Strykers “A” team earned the early 1-0 lead three minutes into the first half when Randy Santos kicked the ball from the opposite end of the court with enough power and height to sneak into the goal over Lizama. Shipyard’s first-half goal came from Jared Quichocho with 1:25 minutes left in the half.

Francis Chargualaf opened the scoring in the second half connecting on a pass from teammate Hiro Asoshina from across the court to give the Strykers “A” team a 2-1 advantage. About eight minutes later, it was déjà vu for Shipyard keeper Kalen Lizama when the tandem of Asoshina and Chargualaf scored again with a similar passing play.

Regardless of the score, Shipyard continued to put pressure on the Strykers “A” team and was rewarded with a goal with just about 11 minutes left in the contest. Campos, who had earlier managed to stop the ball near the goal, fumbled with it as he was moving to get into position to throw it to a teammate. Shipyard’s Chris Reyes was able to take possession of the ball on the play and body it into the goal for the final score of the contest.

The Strykers “A” team remains undefeated at 2-0, while Shipyard falls to 1-1. The Orange Crushers also move up to 2-0 with a 13-0 win over the Strykers “B” team. Jaime Ortega struck four times and teammates Marco Napoli and Jon Sardea each scored twice for the Crushers. Alfred Agahan, Stanley Rice and Kyle Mesa also joined the scoring parade for the Crushers. The other two Crushers goals were on Strykers “B” team own goals.

Quality Distributors move up to 2-0 after defeating Doosan FC 8-2. Andre Gadia and James Bush each scored two goals for Quality. Joseph Cruz, Brian Pritchard, Kaito Inoue and Take Inoue also scored for Quality. Doosan’s pair of goals were scored by Eric Redona two minutes into the first half and later Kristian Cruz.

The Cobras move up to 1-1 with an 11-3 victory over the FC Shotguns. The Cobras’ Ashton Surber completed a hat trick in 22 minutes of play and finished with five goals. Gerald Aguon scored twice and Cobras teammates Joedee Reyes, Joaquin Sablan and Fred Alig powered in a goal each. The Cobras’ other goal came on a Shotguns own goal.

The Shotguns earned their goals on a penalty kick by Yu Tanabe and shots by Curtis Villatora and Don Merfalen.

Men’s futsal action continues at 1 p.m. Sunday with the Crushers taking on the Cobras in the first game of the day at the Guam Sports Complex gym.
