Q & A with U.S. Futsal National Team Head Coach Keith Tozer

June 20, 2012

U.S. Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozer has named the 14-player roster that he will lead at the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship. Tozer has been at the helm of the Futsal National Team since 1996 and has led the team to three FIFA Futsal World Cups. He took some time to speak with ussoccer.com about the group of players he has chosen to vie for one of CONCACAF’s four berths to the World Cup in Thailand later this year.

ussoccer.com: Can you speak a little bit about the roster that you’ve chosen and players’ experience? What do the veterans contribute and what do the new players contribute?
Keith Tozer: “I think the players that we put together, what they all have in common is they’re a pretty fit team and we felt that because we’re not a strong futsal nation as far as professional leagues, we felt that our fitness would be something that would carry us through. Especially playing three games in three days. The bottom line is, I think we’re a very fit team, a strong team and a team that is physically prepared. A lot of these players come from professional teams in the Major Indoor Soccer League. They have won championships in Baltimore, they have won championships in Milwaukee, they have won championships in a lot of the other cities they come from, so I think their professional pedigree will also help in this tournament as we carry on and run through it.

“The thing I like most about this team is that even though we are a young futsal team, we continue to improve each and every practice and each and every game. That was very evident in this last trip that we just had to Guatemala.”

ussoccer.com: How did the last trip to Guatemala help your team prepare for what it can expect during the tournament, where they will be facing the top nations in the region?
KT: “I think, just like any sport, preseason is really important to get the team together but you really don’t know what you have to work on until you actually play an opponent. That’s what we found out when we were in Guatemala two weeks ago. We played four games in six days. We also trained during those matches and each game brought a different set of issues that we needed to address and take care of. It was so beneficial for us to go down and play those games, and not only to go play the games but to actually go down into the city that the CONCACAF Championship is going to be in, to actually play a game where the CONCACAF games are going to be played at, it was extremely beneficial for us.”

ussoccer.com: What do expect from your opponents? What do you know about the teams you’ll be facing?
KT: “Like any World Cup championship or any qualifier, in group play, your first game is probably the most important. Panama we played in the 2008 qualifiers and we did win that game. They have an extremely good goalkeeper. They’re very athletic. They’re very fast. They look to counter attack. They have a new coach, a Cuban coach, so they’re going to be very organized. That’s going to be an extremely tough opponent. Then we play the winner of Canada vs. El Salvador. What is good about that is that we’ll be able to watch both of their preliminary qualification matches in Guatemala prior to the CONCACAF tournament starting, so we’ll be able to scout them and see which players they’re going to play. Then we go to the gold medal winners. Guatemala was the 2008 champ. They’ve done great in years past because of the professional futsal league they have created in the past six or seven years. Of course we won the gold medal in 2004 and it was something that hurt us last time, not winning it. That game, hopefully, will be for where you sit in the qualification. We’re in a tough group and we’ll take each game at a time.”

ussoccer.com: Is there anything in particular you’re telling the players as far as mental or physical preparation, so they can be ready in a week and a half?
KT: “This is the first time in futsal history that the United States team has had a fitness coach. Aidan Byrne came on board during the last couple trips, the one in Los Angeles and the last one in Guatemala. We’ve been using the Polar Team 2 program. The players are monitored on a daily basis throughout the United States while they’re doing the program. That’s why I’m very positive about the fitness level that we’re at right now. I think that has been a big boost for us. I think just coming together as many times as we have recently is another positive. Our goalkeeping, Danny Waltman and Boris Pardo, are two great goalkeepers from the Major Indoor Soccer League and will continue that hopefully down there. I think we’re up for the challenge.”

U.S. Futsal Blog: Getting Settled in Guatemala

June 28, 2012

The U.S. Futsal National Team arrived in Guatemala City on Wednesday night, taking to the futsal court for training on Thursday afternoon.

Fourteen players made the trek to Guatemala on a quest for the team’s third consecutive trip to the FIFA Futsal World Cup. After winning the CONCACAF title in 2004, the team qualified for the FIFA Futsal World Cup in 2008 but didn’t take home any regional hardware. Head coach Keith Tozer’s side seeks to regain the regional title in 2012.

The U.S. will face Panama, Canada or El Salvador, and host Guatemala in Group A, with the top two teams advancing to the semifinals. All four semifinalists qualify for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

U.S. Futsal National Team Group A Schedule

Date - Opponent - Time (ET) - TV - Venue
July 2 - Panama - 8 p.m. - CONCACAF.com - Domo Polideportivo; Guatemala City, Guatemala

July 3 - Canada/El Salvador - 8 p.m. - CONCACAF.com - Domo Polideportivo; Guatemala City, Guatemala

July 4 - Guatemala - 10 p.m. - CONCACAF.com - Domo Polideportivo; Guatemala City, Guatemala

Canada and El Salvador are in the midst of a two-leg playoff series to determine the final participant at the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship. El Salvador holds the advantage after the first match, having defeated Canada 4-1 with four goals from Rene Guillermo Rosales. The teams square off again on Friday, June 29, at 1 p.m. ET.

U.S. Futsal Blog: Legendary Preparation

June 29, 2012

It was a night for fine-tuning at the Megapaca futsal complex on Friday night as U.S. Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozer’s squad played Guatemala Futsal League club Legendarios in a closed-door scrimmage. The U.S. won 5-1 with goals from Bato Radoncic, Ptah Myers, Nelson Santana, Kraig Chiles and Matthew Stewart.

The U.S. is two days out from its first match of the 2012 CONCACAF Championship, where the team will seek to earn a berth at the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup later this year.

Radoncic put the U.S. on the board first when Stewart sent a corner kick back down the sideline to Pat Healey. Healey served in a quick cross to the middle of the goalmouth where Radoncic was lurking, beating his defender for the one-time deflection into the net.

Stewart, the team captain, once again instigated the goal sequence on the second U.S. goal, pressuring a confident Legendarios goalkeeper who had come out past the midfield line and was holding the ball. Stewart’s pressure caused the goalkeeper to turn the ball over and Myers sprinted onto it, beating his defender in the footrace. With the defender on his heels, Myers managed to tap the ball forward before the goalkeeper could recover, sending it into the open goal from just past midfield.

The final goal of the first half initiated with Radoncic holding the ball in the middle and dishing it to Stewart on the right. Stewart timed his square pass perfectly for Santana, was making the run to the far post. Santana ran onto the ball with speed, slamming it home from six feet out.

Legendarios regained their composure during the break, opening the second half scoring by taking advantage of some miscommunication between U.S. goalkeeper Boris Pardo and midfielder Angel Rivillo. Rivillo and the Legendarios attacker battled for the 50-50 ball, with the Guatemalan player winning the ball and hitting it toward the goal as Pardo came out to cut off the angle. The ball slid under Pardo and Myers was unable to sprint back to stop it from crossing over the goal line.

The U.S. responded with two unanswered goals. Lucas Stauffer passed the ball up the right flank to Sandre Naumoski who passed it straight up to Chiles. Chiles let the ball run toward the endline, pulling the goalkeeper out before sending it in from a tight angle.

Stewart sealed the score line for the U.S. as he correctly read an attacking play and intercepted the ball. He carried the ball up the middle, passing it to the left for Chiles who returned it with a deft wall pass for Stewart finish from close range.

Q & A with Ptah Myers, Sandre Naumoski and Matthew Stewart

Ptah Myers, Sandre Naumoski and Matthew Stewart speak with ussoccer.com about the upcoming 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship, their previous CONCACAF Championship experience and the team that seeks to book a ticket to Thailand for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup.

July 1, 2012

The 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship is two days away and Ptah Myers, Sandre Naumoski and Matthew Stewart know the feeling well. The trio of veteran players makes up the remaining crew from the U.S. Futsal National Team that participated in the 2008 edition of the tournament, which serves as qualifying for the FIFA Futsal World Cup. The three players took time to speak with ussoccer.com about the qualifying tournament and the team that seeks to earn a ticket to Thailand.

ussoccer.com: You were here in 2008, so you’re a little bit more used to the experience overall. How does that help you prepare for this tournament? What can you share with the other guys?

Ptah Myers: “One of the main things is that the CONCACAF Championship is such a big tournament; to be able to go to the World Cup is big. There’s not necessarily more pressure but it is going to be a little bit more intense because you’re playing in a different country. When we played Guatemala the fans were so loud we couldn’t even hear each other on the floor. You’re a little bit more mentally prepared and when you’re out there you’re always aware of the outside factors and what can go on during the game, and how intense the game is.”

Matthew Stewart: “When we were in the CONCACAF Championship last time we were the younger guys on the team. A lot of those guys had already been in a CONCACAF qualifying tournament and they were part of that team that won the gold. With the experience that we gained from those guys in the last CONCACAF Championship, I think we’ve done a pretty decent job with the younger kids, because this is a whole new team.”

Sandre Naumoski: “I think for me, physically, fitness-wise, and mentally, I feel more prepared. Of course, four years later, I’m a little bit more mature and took care of my body a little bit better, especially in the last year leading up to this event. I think mentally, knowing what to expect plays a big role. I don’t want to be too calm, because I’ve been there before, but at the same time I don’t want to be too anxious to make mistakes. I think the experience is a big part of it.”

ussoccer.com: Have any of the younger guys come to you to ask what it’s like in the stadium or any other questions about qualifying?

PM: “Definitely. There have been a couple of questions, especially from Lucas [Stauffer]. He’s the youngest guy on the team, asking what the whole experience is going to be like. You just have to let him know it’s going to be a huge crowd, and as you’re walking out there you might be a little bit nervous but that’s expected from everyone. It’s kind of funny because as you’re walking out you have the two teams right next to each other so you’re kind of measuring each other up. Sometimes there are some words being said. The good thing is, most of the time we don’t even know what they’re saying, unless you know the language that they speak. We have had a couple questions from the younger guys and the main thing we’ve been telling them is, just go out there and play your game. You’re here for a reason.”

SN: “I would just add that, for us, this is the World Cup. Winning the gold is like winning the gold in the World Cup. Not being a futsal nation, winning in a futsal country is something that we’re going to remember for the rest of our life. It’s one thing we want to communicate to the guys, either that haven’t played or the younger guys: leave it all out there. Otherwise, you’re going to regret it a couple years down the road.”

MS: “I’ll add another thing about the younger players and the team this year. I don’t feel like there’s one clique on this team. Everyone has a lot of respect for each other and I think that goes a long way. I know everyone here enjoys each other’s company and there really isn’t any segregation on this team at all. I think that helps out as well.”

ussoccer.com: It seems like this time around you had more preparation than in years past. There were more camps and more trips like the one to Brazil last year and the one to Guatemala earlier this year. How does that help the team chemistry and help the team come together to focus on the task at hand?

MS: “We had a trip to Manaus, Brazil, about six months ago and that was pretty much a totally different team. I know Coach Tozer was looking to go young and try to bring players in and build for the future, and when you go to Brazil and you play in that tournament with so many good countries in that tournament, you need the experience. I think he realized that. That’s pretty much why we have a different team now. You have a lot of older guys that have a lot of experience, plus you have young guys. This year we have the youngest guy in futsal history. He’s 17 years old.”

PM: “I think one major thing for us is that we play against each other in the MISL. I’ve played against Matt for many, many years. I played with Sunny [Naumoski] for many years in Philadelphia and also with Angel Rivillo. Most of the guys come from the MISL, so we’re constantly battling each other, week in and week out during the season. Just having that competition and having that respect for each other goes a long way. Knowing that the three of us have been here and we kind of know what to expect helps these guys, because what we try to do is try to keep everyone together as much as possible. I think that helps us out a lot.”

SN: “The U.S. National Team doesn’t have any superstars. Like Matt said, there’s a lot of respect between all of us and the trips have really benefitted the chemistry. The more you play together, the more you know each other’s tendencies which builds the chemistry on the team and it’s going to help leading into the tournament. The more time we spend together, the better it is for the team.”

ussoccer.com: How do you feel going into the first game?

SN: “This is the biggest game, Panama. I’m very excited. This is the team that we knocked out of having any opportunity to go play in the World Cup [in 2008] so they’re going come angry and hungry to win. For me, that’s a drive. As long as guys are up for the challenge, we’ll be okay. I’m very excited.”

PM: “Most definitely. I’m very excited. I think that in 2008, we were fortunate enough to qualify but we didn’t win that gold. I think that any time that you don’t accomplish your goal you look back and think about what you could have done, personally, and also as a team. I think that one of the things that Sunny touched on earlier was that physically, I think we’re prepared, and mentally, just having that experience is going to help us a lot. I’m definitely looking forward to the challenge and I think this first game is going to be very important for us.”

MS: “We’re all coaches here and when I have my team and we’re going into a tournament, I always tell them the first game in the tournament is one of the most important games. You always want to start out on the right foot with a win. You go into a tournament and let’s say you lose the first game, now you’re fighting to try to get yourself back into the tournament. I think we’re all on the same page with that. We want to get these points right away. If you win the first one, you’re looking good. If you win the second one, now you have a really good chance. We played Panama in the last CONCACAF Championship and ended up tying. They pretty much sat back on us and just countered us. We played them to see who went on to the World Cup and we sat back and we countered them, so they couldn’t counter us. That worked out.”

SN: “I think, tactically, we’ll be ready as long as we have the right mindset by not thinking we’re better than them or they’re better than us. We just have to play to the best of our abilities and we should get good results. We have the squad.”

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (July 2, 2012) – The U.S. Futsal National Team dropped its Group A opening match 5-2 against Panama in the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship.

The U.S. next faces Canada at 8 p.m. ET on Tuesday, July 3, before taking on the defending champion and host Guatemala at 10 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 4, in what will be the 100th CONCACAF Futsal Championship match. All of the games are streamed live on CONCACAF.com.

“Our backs are definitely against the wall,” said U.S. Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozer. “We know have to come up with a victory against Canada and then play the defending champs in the third game to go through. It’s kind of disappointing, but there’s nothing we can do about it right now. Right now we have to focus on Canada.”

Panama opened the scoring in the sixth minute with Miguel Lasso carrying up the ball up the left flank and cutting inside before letting loose a short-range blast into the net. Lasso would prove dangerous throughout the match, scoring four of the team’s five goals.

Lasso’s second goal came in the 14th minute, and the U.S. responded with a goal of its own 35 seconds later. Machel Millwood on the left flank touched it back to Patrick Healey, who ran up the flank in an overlapping run, touching it to Bryan Perez on the left post. Perez hit a one-timer, blasting it past Panama goalkeeper Jose Victoria for his first career goal.

But it was Lasso who stamped the seal on the first half with a third goal just 10 seconds later. Panama raced down on a counter-attack and the U.S. defense did well to recover. Lasso hit a hard shot into a wall of white jerseys and the bounce came right back to him. He recovered well, slipping his second attempt around the defense and into the net.

The U.S. came out with renewed energy after the break, getting off five shots in the first two minutes. In the 27th minute, Panama forward Apolinar Galvez was booked for taking down Myers as he streaked toward goal on a breakaway. On the restart, midfielder Angel Rivillo passed to the left for Kraig Chiles, who slammed it low and into the near corner, past the sprawling Victoria, for his fifth career goal.

Panama kept the pressure up, counter-attacking throughout the evening and providing U.S. goalkeeper Daniel Waltman with a busy night. In the 29 th minute, Claudio Goodridge broke through and blasted a shot that deflected off a U.S. defender before Waltman was able to make the save and send the ball skidding off the crossbar. Four of Waltman’s eight saves came in the final five minutes of play.

As the U.S. sought to tie the match, Tozer pulled the goalkeeper and sent on Healey and Myers as alternating fifth attackers. Panama took advantage of the open goal, scoring two almost identical goals in the final two minutes. It was once again Lasso in the 39th minute as he dispossessed the last defender and carried the ball into the open net. Alquis Alvarado followed suit, dispossessing the last defender and scoring before the U.S. defense could recover with 34 seconds left in the game.

Seven U.S. players earned their first international futsal cap against Panama, including Healey, Millwood, Perez, Bato Radoncic, Rivillo, Nelson Santana and Kevin Ten Eyck.

U.S. Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozer and select players discuss the team's opening game loss to Panama at the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship.

U.S. Futsal National Team Head Coach KEITH TOZER
On the first game:
“Our backs are definitely against the wall. We know we have to come up with a victory against Canada and then play the defending champs in the third game to go through. It’s kind of disappointing, I feel. We gave up five goals, which I didn’t think this team would do, but there’s nothing we can do about it right now. Right now we have to focus on Canada.”

On the team’s adjustments at halftime:
“At halftime we made some adjustments and we moved [Kraig] Chile back a little bit to get him to face the goal. I thought he played really well in the second half. He had a lot of shots. It was 3-2 with two and a half minutes to go in the game. We had a restart at the end and we just didn’t execute it. We would have hoped to have tied it up there. Then we lost two goals in the fifth attacker. The only thing we can do now is keep their heads up and get ready for the next match.”

On whether it helped the more inexperienced players to get their first game under their belt:
“I think so. We were here a couple weeks ago and played four games and that helped us out tremendously. Sports is sports. We gave up some early counter attack goals, which they are known for, and that was really the story of the game.”

U.S. Futsal captain MATTHEW STEWART
On the first game:
“I know the guys worked really hard leading up to the CONCACAF Championship. We came out, we put them under high pressure but it just didn’t seem like the energy was there this game. We seemed like we played a little timid. It seems like there was a lot of pressure on some of the guys and we just didn’t have the legs underneath us for some reason.”

On the new players getting their nerves out after the first game:
“I think that’s what it came down to. Some guys just kind of psyched themselves out. This being their first cap, hopefully the guys have settled down and come out tomorrow playing like we know how to play.”

On how the team feels heading into the second game:
“We started out slow in the first game. The energy wasn’t there, but I know come tomorrow, it has to be there. There are no ifs, ands or buts about it, we have to come out and be ready to play right from the first whistle to the last whistle. We have to get the win.”

U.S. Futsal defender KEVIN TEN EYCK
On playing in his first CONCACAF Futsal Championship game:
“In the U.S., we play indoor soccer. We don’t play futsal as much and it’s definitely a big change. But we’ve had enough camps to get experience under our belts and understand what to do. It’s good to get the first game out of the way and we have to improve and prepare for the next games that are coming up.”

On what the team discussed at halftime:
“We were still in the game. It was 3-1 at half and our goal was to take one goal back by 10 minutes into the game and use the last 10 minutes to get another one to tie it up. We weren’t really panicked or anything, which you could see from our play. We still kept the ball, we still knocked it around. That was basically our talk: stay calm, don’t panic.”

On how he feels going into the next game tomorrow:
“It’s a quick turnaround but we’ve been training really hard, running a lot and getting in shape so we shouldn’t have heavy legs. I think it will be good because everybody’s nerves are going to be settled down, considering the majority of our team had never had a career appearance before. I think, hopefully, we can come out with a different result tomorrow night.”

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (July 3, 2012) – The U.S. Futsal National Team defeated Canada 3-2 with goals from Patrick Healey, Bryan Perez and Kraig Chiles at the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship.

It was a must-win match for the U.S., which earned its first three points of the tournament and faces defending champion Guatemala in the third and final group match. The encounter will be the 100th CONCACAF Futsal qualifying match, and will take place at 10 p.m. ET on July 4, live on CONCACAF.com.

“I give the team so much credit because after a disappointing loss last night they rebounded against a very good Canadian team,” said U.S. Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozer. “I thought Sipho Sibiya and their team played quite well and it was the battle I thought it was going to be. It was two proud countries and two new futsal programs and that’s what we got tonight. It was a great victory. We live for another day.”

Guatemala defeated Panama 5-2 in the second match of the evening, putting the Chapines at the top of Group A with six points. A victory against Guatemala combined with a Panama victory against Canada would leave Group A with three teams tied at six points, in which case, the USA’s fate would be determined by a tie-breaker.

Both the U.S. and Canada went into the game knowing that only a win would keep the team alive in the tournament, and both teams imposed a high pressure defense. In the seventh minute, goalkeeper Daniel Waltman was called for a four-second violation as the referee deemed that he held the ball for too long in his arc. Canada took advantage of the free kick from the penalty spot. Captain Bruno Xavier lined up to take the shot, hitting it hard enough for the ball to ricochet behind the defense and Waltman and into the goal.

The U.S. defense held fast after the goal and the team continued to attack with pace. The high pressure paid off in the 17th minute as Healey won a ball in the middle of the field and connected a wall pass with Machel Millwood. Healey received the pass and dished it left for Chiles who took a shot that hit the post. Healey was there for the rebound, not missing from close-range.

The first half ended with two shots for each team in the final minute as both looked for the go-ahead goal before the break. The intermission recharged the U.S. players, who came out with a renewed sense of urgency.

The stalemate was broken in the 30th minute as Healey once again forced a turnover in the middle of the field and carried the ball up, passing it left on the ground to Perez as Roy Blance came out to cut him off. Perez slotted the ball into the middle of the open goal for his second career goal and second goal of the tournament.

Canada pulled one back less than 30 second later as Matthew Rios headed down a long pass right onto the path of Ian Bennett. Bennett, who plays under Tozer at the Milwaukee Wave, brought down the perfectly weighted ball in stride and fired a blast past Waltman, who could do nothing to save the point-blank shot.

Chiles came through with his sixth career goal and second goal of the tournament in the 33rd minute. The U.S. earned a corner kick that Angel Rivillo passed back for Ptah Myers. Myers laid it off for Chiles who hit it into the net as Blance was screened by his defenders.

Blance was replaced in the Canada goal by goalkeeper Josh Lemus, who also served as a fifth attacker as Canada looked for the equalizer. The pressure was felt by the U.S. defense, particularly Waltman, who made four point-blank saves in the final two minutes of the game to earn Man of the Match honors for the second straight game.

U.S. Futsal National Team head coach KEITH TOZER
On the team’s play in the second game:
“I give the team so much credit because after a disappointing loss last night they rebounded against a very good Canadian team. I thought Sipho Sibiya and their team played quite well and it was kind of the battle that I thought it was going to be. It was two proud countries and two new futsal programs and that’s what we got tonight. It was a great victory. We live for another day.”

On the difference between the first and second game:
“We knew there was no other game. If we lost today, we’re basically done. The guys listened to the game plan, they stuck to the game plan, they executed the game plan. We got some nice goals when we needed them and our defense held great. Playing against a fifth attacker for a couple minutes is very difficult so I’m very happy for them. They needed this. Now we throw everything out that we can tomorrow and see what happens.”

On the team’s defense:
“We played good defense. Yesterday we gave up five goals, today we only gave up two and (Canada) is a team that can score goals. They scored three against Guatemala and scored much more against their other opponent. Overall it was just good team defense and timely goals.”

U.S. Futsal National Team forward KRAIG CHILES
On the game in general:
“It was two fairly athletic teams and we knew it was going to be a battle from the first minute. There was a little bit of a rivalry between our two countries and we knew it was going to be an intense game and it’s a must-win for both of us so we’re excited that we got that win and we’ll move on to tomorrow’s game with something to play for.”

On scoring the game-winner:
“About five minutes earlier, I pretty much gave up a goal tracking my defender and, basically, he scored on me. I was kind of down and out and I needed to go in there and make an impact. They were taking away my right foot, I pushed it to my left side and luckily got the shot off in time. It was exciting. It’s my first win with the U.S. team so I couldn’t be more happy.”

On the team’s defense and goalkeeper Daniel Waltman:
“Danny played out of his mind. In the last three minutes, they pulled their goalkeeper and pressed on us and they had about a handful of chances and it was a good game. It was back and forth and I’m happy to get out with the win. They did all that they could and Danny really came up at the end.”

On playing Guatemala on July 4:
“This is going to be the toughest game of the group. We know that. We’re going to be fired up. It’s our Independence Day and we’re going to be excited and ready to go. Hopefully it’s going to be a full stadium, a lot of energy, and we’re going to do everything we can to get into the World Cup.”

U.S. Futsal National Team defender PATRICK HEALEY
On scoring the goal that tied it at 1-1 and eventually winning the game:
“It was a key goal. We were down one to nothing; if we go down two it’s a heartbreaker kind of thing. It was a good one-two with me and Machel [Millwood] and Kraig [Chiles] got back pole. He was unlucky and hits the post and I was just lucky to be in the right spot to finish it.”

On the team’s mentality heading into the third game against Guatemala:
“We’re still alive. We would have liked to win the game by more goals but we got the job done. We kept ourselves alive, but we need to get a ‘W’ tomorrow. If we don’t get a win tomorrow, we’re out. We’re going to give it all we got and see how the chips fall.”

On whether the team is ready for the final group game:
“I think everybody felt we played well the first game. We actually played well for most of this game. We just need to take it step-by-step in every play, hopefully get a lead against Guatemala, because, as you can hear, this crowd is nuts. If we could get a lead, that would be better.”

U.S. Futsal National Team defender SANDRE NAUMOSKI
On how the team felt going into the match:
“How does a kid feel in a candy store? That’s how I feel about this game. I found out that I was going to play around 3 p.m. today. I’ve been ready all trip. I was ready for the last game, this game and will be ready for the next game. I’m very excited. I’m comfortable playing in the back. I thought we did a nice job. Winning is great, losing is not. Getting the ‘W’ was a must for us so we delivered. It was very exciting.”

On the team’s mentality going into the third game against the host country on July 4:
“A couple of the guys got a little bit overly excited. They were happy with the win and almost started celebrating. Our quest is not done. We have one more game against a very tough Guatemalan team. Are they beatable? Yes, they are beatable. We have to play our best defense ever, we have to execute our chances. It’s in our hands. If we beat them, we could go through.”

On the team’s composure on defense during the last few minutes of the game:
“When they pulled the goalkeeper up past midfield we can’t high-pressure them anymore so we’re behind the ball. We had to take away the middle pass, which was very important. We were trying to get him to go around and takes shots from the outside. A couple of times it did come close but Danny Waltman had some big saves. Myself, Ptah Myers and everybody who was in that lineup sacrificed their body and we actually got a couple of blocks. It was big.”

U.S. Futsal National Team Eliminated from 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship with 2-1 Loss to Guatemala

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (July 4, 2012) – The U.S. Futsal National Team bowed out of the 2012 CONCACAF Futsal Championship with a 2-1 loss to defending champion and host Guatemala on Wednesday night at the Domo Polideportivo in Guatemala City, Guatemala.

The loss left the U.S. in third place in Group A, behind Guatemala with nine points from three victories, and Panama with six points. The match was the 100 th CONCACAF Futsal qualifying game.

“I couldn’t be more proud of a group of guys who are non-futsal players to get together in only months and to play the way they played tonight,” said U.S. Futsal National Team head coach Keith Tozer. “In a short three-game group play, every game is so important and you only get better as these things go but, unfortunately, you have to come out really hard. To play the defending champs – guys who play futsal on a daily basis, they travel the world, they play in a professional league – for us to play against them the way we did, I couldn’t be more proud. It still hurts not going to the World Cup. You do everything you can to get to the World Cup so I’m disappointed that the players won’t be able to go to it but today just reminds me that it’s an honor to coach the U.S. Futsal National Team.”

Guatemala’s Rafael Gonzalez scored in the fourth minute for the hosts, receiving a ball just behind the U.S. defense right in front of U.S. goalkeeper Daniel Waltman, slipping it past Waltman before he could react. The goal sent the crowd into a frenzy, and Gonzalez was booked for excessive celebration after removing his shirt.

Matthew Stewart scored the lone goal for the U.S. in the 10th minute. High pressure from Bato Radoncic forced Edgar Macal to turn the ball over and Radoncic carried it up the field with Stewart running along next to him. Guatemala goalkeeper William Ramirez came out to cut of Radoncic’s angle as he hit his shot far post. The ball hit the post and bounced out to where Stewart was following the play. Stewart didn’t miss from short-range, scoring his sixth career CONCACAF Futsal Championship goal.

The U.S. defense held Guatemala at bay throughout the rest of the half and despite close chances for either side, the teams went into the locker room at halftime deadlocked at 1-1. The tie held until well into the second half as Guatemala struggled to get behind the U.S. defense.

It wasn’t until the 34th minute that the Chapines were able to break through, as a Guatemala attacker streaked down the flank and got just enough space on his defender to shoot. Waltman made the initial save, but the rebound landed in front of the goal where Alan Aguilar came running in to slam it into the net.

Tozer’s squad pushed hard for the equalizer in the final six minutes, alternating between using a fifth attacker and having a goalkeeper throughout the rest of the game. Waltman and fifth attacker Ptah Myers combined for six of the 12 total saves in the final five minutes of the game as Waltman earned Man of the Match honors for the third consecutive match.

Despite numerous chances for both sides, the final score held as Guatemala and Panama advanced to the semifinals of the tournament and qualified for the 2012 FIFA Futsal World Cup in Thailand. Costa Rica and Mexico were the two teams that qualified from Group B.
