Middlesbrough Futsal ClubSR Elite win Teesside Junior Futsal CupSunday, 08 July 2012Middlesbrough Futsal Club hosted their first under-12s open tournament on Sunday and national champions SR Elite from Derby went away with the trophy, beating local side Cleveland Juniors Blue 5-1 in the final.
With eight teams taking part including the winners from Derby, two from Hull, one from Newcastle and four from Middlesbrough it was a fantastic day of futsal at Durham University's Queen's Campus, Stockton. Boro's under-12s lost out in the semi final to SR Elite 4-1, while the under-10s lost all three games in the group, but will be pleased with their performances against older opposition.
The two Cleveland Juniors teams met in the other semi final and it was the boys in blue who went through against their mates to take on SR Elite, but they had to come from behind to win 4-2 and take their place in the final.
SR Elite topped their group impressively, without conceding a goal, winning 3-0, 9-0 and 9-0 against Cleveland Red, Boro under-10s and Sky Blue Tigers respectively. The other group, which included Boro's under-12s, Newcastle Eastend, Sky Blue Lions and Cleveland blue ended with Cleveland topping the group after beating Boro 1-0 in the final group game. It was a close group with Newcastle Eastend almost equalising against Cleveland Blue with the last kick of the game, which would have given them hope of progressing into the semi finals.
Club chairman Damon Shaw was pleased to see such a good turnout and a good atmosphere. "It was a really good day for all involved and we hope that the children had a good time. SR Elite were worthy champions but every team showed some really good futsal and all conducted themselves well throughout the day. We will definitely be running more junior stuff in the coming months and hopefully we can get more and more kids playing futsal."
