Chris Georgakopoulos25 Jan 12PLAYING futsal for fun has led to Chris O’Dowd being selected in the Australian 24-man disability futsal squad.
O’Dowd, 22, of Glenmore Park, represented the NSW disabled team at the National Futsal Championships in Canberra recently. After impressive performances he was chosen in the national squad.
“I feel good about making the Australian team and I would love to represent my country,” O’Dowd said.
“It was good to play for NSW, I really enjoyed it.
“I was very lucky to have Nova Employment who sponsored me to help me compete in Canberra.”
The Australian team will be cut down to 10 players closer to their November clash with New Zealand.
O’Dowd admitted he started playing futsal by chance.
“I only started playing futsal for fun after one of my friends from softball told me about it,” he said. “I first played futsal back when I was at Kingwood High School in 2006.
“Back when I was in the support unit one of the head teachers decided for us to start playing against other schools and we ended up coming first two years in a row and I loved it ever since.”
