Semi-final hopes still alive

THE Solomon Islands National U16 Futsal team still has a chance of progressing on to the semi-final playoffs of the FFA Futsal Nationals held in Canberra, Australia, depending on the outcome of their two final pool matches today.

After a tiring but successful day two of competition yesterday which saw the young Kurukurus beat Football NSW West 7-0 and Victoria 7-1, despite going down to ACT Cobras 4-2, the young lads from the tiny island state of Solomons will have to win two remaining matches against NSW Lightning and South Australia today.

The young Kurukurus currently lie in fourth spot with a total of 12 points having won four of their matches and losing two.

Solomon Islands ranked as one of the powerhouse futsal nations in the Pacific region will go into their last two games determined to win and grab that semi-final spot and a chance to win this year’s competition.

Their classy style of play has gained them much praise amongst the futsal fans that turned up each day, cheering on the future stars of Solomon Islands futsal.

A win in each of Solomon Islands last two games will put them amongst the top three teams in the U16 category that progresses to the semi-finals tomorrow.

Young Kurukuru's flying high

THE Solomon Islands U16 Futsal team continued their winning streak at the FFA Futsal Nationals in Canberra, Australia with a convincing 7-0 victory over Football NSW West, followed by a 7-1 thrashing of Victoria.

After a disappointing opening game which saw the young Kurukurus go down 4-2 to the ACT Cobras on day two of the competition, the lads bounced back refreshed and determined to extend their stay in the competition, seeing off the Football NSW West and Victoria.

Solomon Islands burst off in flames in the opening stanza firing from all angles and finally capitalizing on some poor defending from their opponents to go one ahead.

Continuous pressure from the young Kurukurus saw them dominate all positions of the court against their opponents who sit bottom of the ladder after round seven of the competition.

The fancy footwork of the young Solomon Islanders not only earned them lots of praise by the crowd but also four more quick goals that came flooding in.

The young Kurukurus went for the breather with a commanding 5-0 advantage over their opponents.

The second stanza was full of entertainment as the Football NSW West tried to find a way back in the match, pressurizing the Solomon Islands defense however good coordination by the young Kurukurus prevented any goals from going in.

NSW West’s continuous pressure didn’t go as planned when Solomon Islands having defended well, moved on a fast counter to hammer in their sixth goal.

Solomon Islands continuous attacking style of football again resulted in the final goal minutes before the final whistle.

Boosted by their win over the NSW West in the afternoon, the young Kurukurus continued their winning form with another blockbuster performance against the helpless Victoria side.

Two quick goals in the opening minutes saw the Solomon side gain momentum and took control of the game.

Ball possession and their fancy footwork style of play paid off again, this time running riot with a 4-1 goal galore in the first half.

Three more goals in the second half sent wild jubilations through the Solomon players and supporters that attended.

The young Kurukurus now have a chance of making it through to the semi-final playoffs if they win their two remaining matches against NSW lightning and South Australia today.
