Kids kick on to reap rewards

AN after-school care program is developing future futsal stars.

Sloosh Kids Care, an Active After-School Communities service, hosts futsal matches and other activities for children at the Michael Wenden Aquatic Leisure Centre from Monday to Friday.

Sloosh manager Ruth Brissett spotted the potential of the futsal players and successfully applied for an Australian Sports Commission grant to train and hire coach Frank Costa.

The program has since been able to field two teams for the Southern Districts futsal competition.

St Therese’s Primary School student Brian Flores, 10, was also scouted to play for NSW as goalkeeper.

Ms Brissett said the success of the futsal games was a breakthrough for Sloosh Kids Care.

“We’re a not-for-profit organisation, so to get a coach and field teams is a big thing for us,” Ms Brissett said.

“Having a student selected for a state team shows what is possible at after-school care.

“The children actually want to come and play here after school - they love coming along.”

Ms Brissett said she was planning to expand the program’s activities.
