Douglas MarauFriday, 30 December 2011FUTSAL clubs around Ulawa Island are set to kick-off their Christmas and New Year futsal tournament today.
The competition will be hosted by the Madjoa village which is expected to attract teams from all over the island.
The event is hosted by the Madjoa futsal organizing committee with prices sponsored by Aslan Stationaries.
The event will be held under two categories; senior boys and under 13 years old.
Speaking to Star Sports over the weekend, manager of Aslan Stationaries the major sponsor of the tournament, William Marau said he was honored to sponsor the tournament.
“This is one way of encouraging youth participation to enable a crime-free Christmas period as well as strengthening social bond and friendship among people of all ages through sports,” he said.
He said such event would also engage youths in sports that would keep them out of trouble during the festive season.
The tournament is a lead up to a major beach soccer tournament which is also expected to kick off this weekend.
The beach soccer will be held at Rongolelei beach also at Ulawa Island.
The beach soccer tournament will also promote Rongolelei beach, a hidden paradise in the South Pacific.
The beach soccer tournament will be organized by the Pidgin Holdings Limited.
Mr Marau has also praised Pidgin Holdings for hosting the event.
He said working together with communities and youths in the island through sport is important for peaceful co-existence and social coherence.
“I urge other prominent figures from Ulawa to come forward and let’s work together to and find ways to assist our people back in the village,” Mr Marau said.
“Together we can help people with their economic burdens as well as improving people’s standard of living.”
