Welsh FA Web SiteWales futsal squad from training camp announcedThe Inaugural FAW Futsal Squad has been announced to take part in a one day training camp and fixture in Cardiff on Sunday 18th December at Cardiff University.
15 players from across Wales have been selected to start preparations ahead of the UEFA European Championship Qualification tournament in January 2013.
A number of training camps are scheduled throughout 2012 with fixtures against England and other International teams to be announced.
Whilst Futsal is relatively new in Wales a number of children across Wales have now started playing Futsal to support their long term football development. With all Welsh Premier League Academy teams now playing Futsal as part of a winter break opportunities are being developed across the country and there is a clear pathway being developed from grass roots to the elite international squad.
Richard Gunney Futsal Development Officer for the Welsh Football Trust commented “ In Wales the aim is for Futsal at a grass roots level to be another tool in the coaches armoury to support the development of our players in Wales. Futsal is fun, exciting and technically challenging game which supports a players technical and tactical development in football. The Futsal National Squad is a fantastic opportunity for a player to represent Wales in International competitions”
Andrew Howard Head of Competitions at the FAW said: "I'm delighted that over half of the National squad, were first identified through the inaugural FAW Futsal Cup, which was held this year. In fact, there are four players who played for the Champions TNS, who also gained European experience with their club in the UEFA Futsal Cup in August. The FAW Futsal Cup will be held again in the New Year and that will be another opportunity for players throughout Wales to be identified for future National futsal squads."
Mark Evans, Head of International Affairs said: "Futsal is a brand of football that is already a firm favourite the world-over. The FAW hopes that we can now become part of that movement and look forward to our teams competing domestically and internationally."
