New Straits TimesPractice makes perfect for Dani FCDANI FC ‘B’ proved that practice makes perfect when they emerged top guns at the 2011 Revive-Sports Planet Ultimate Champions League Grand Final futsal tournament on Wednesday.
Contested at Sports Planet Ampang, the champions beat Dre FC ‘B’ 2-0 after a hard-fought match to claim RM7,000, a challenge trophy and Revive Isotonic goodies.
The champions also doubled their joy when Dani’s Jamaludin Alias scored six goals to take the Top Scorer award and won RM200.
“This is the third time we’ve participated in this tournament, and it’s great to finally win it,” said team captain Mohd Zahrin Ismail.
“We practise three times a week and take part in about four futsal tournaments a month, so I guess all our hard work and effort have paid off.”
Second-placed Dre FC ‘B’ won RM4,000, medals and Revive goodies while Brabus United ‘B’ beat Dani FC ‘A’ 3-0 in the third-fourth placing match to win RM2,000.
The Men’s category Best Goalkeeper award and RM200 went to Ajassni Parman of Dani FC ‘A’.
The Revive-Sports Planet Ultimate Champions League, the biggest of its kind in Malaysia in terms of venues played, saw three categories contested in the finals — Men’s, Women’s and the Under-17.
The tournament also saw three teams from Singapore participate in the finals for the first time.
In the Women’s category, Phoenix Perfume Paradise ‘A’ beat Rem FC ‘B’ 2-1 to win RM2,000, a challenge trophy and Revive goodies.
The runners-up took home RM1,200 while Putra Ria Tia Amelia FC won RM800 for coming in third.
Court Soccer ‘A’ beat Ferro FC 2-1 to win the Under 17-category, RM1,500 and a challenge trophy. The runners-up left with RM1,000 while Jebat FC took home RM500 after defeating Court Soccer ‘B’ 3-2 in the third-fourth placing match.
All in all, a total of 80 teams competed in the three categories in this year’s Revive-Sports Planet: Ultimate Champions League tournament which offered over RM60,000 in total prize money.
“This has been an extremely well-participated and well-played tournament, and we’re glad that we’ve had the opportunity to witness so many great teams in action,” said Sports Planet executive director Wong Horr Wai. “Judging from the response to this, our fourth edition, we’ll go all out to make it an even better one next year to mark our fifth anniversary and give players and fans something extra-special.”
Permanis Sdn Bhd vice-president of marketing Hemalatha Ragavan said Revive Isotonic was honoured to play its part as title sponsor and help cement the tournament’s reputation as one of the highlights on the local futsal calendar.
“It’s been four great years and we’re delighted to see the tourney growing in strength from year to year as futsal gains in popularity,” she said.
“This event is one of the avenues that Revive Isotonic uses to position itself as the isotonic drink preferred by young, active Malaysians and to also promote futsal and a healthy lifestyle in general.”
