The Cairns PostFar Northern trio win Australian Futsal selectionTuesday, November 22, 2011THREE future stars of futsal from the Far North have earned selection in the Australian Futsal team.
Jack Stephen, Jack Goodwin and Robert Donnelly will head to Malaysia and Brunei to represent Australia in January, after catching the eye of selectors at the national championships held in Sydney earlier this year.
Goodwin, a resilient defender and Stephen, a talented flanker, are both 12, while Donnelly, 11, is a noted striker.
Vikings Futsal Association Northern Queensland CEO Tony Cifuentes praised the talent pool in the Far North. "It’s always good to see to see the local talent getting rewarded and recognised," he said.
"It goes to show that what we’re doing up here is working. We seem to always go quite well at the nationals."
Cifuentes said the youngsters would gain valuable experience from representing Australia overseas.
"It will be a great experience for them and a great thrill to play overseas," he said.
"They’ll get to experience new cultures, but they’ve got good heads on their shoulders so I’d expect them to do well."
