Colleen WinterNov 09, 2011BARRIE - Dreams do come true and sometimes sooner than you think.
That was the case for Eduard Orellana, organizer of the Barrie Futsal league, who said in an article this summer that his ultimate goal would be for Barrie to have a team in the Canadian Premier Futsal League.
Three months later he had to scramble to find a place to hold try-outs for the league that is expected to start in early December.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic that this is happening,” he said of being asked to be one of the six founding teams of the league. “It’s amazing just to be given the opportunity.”
Futsal is indoor soccer played on hardwood floors with a smaller, heavier ball. Other teams in the league will include Mississauga, London, Brampton and two teams from Toronto.
“The calibre of these teams is extremely top quality,” said Orellana. “We’re new and a lot of them have been playing together since they were small but we’ll be able to get a team together that’s good enough.”
The new team will draw players from the existing Barrie league but Orellana wants to extend the draw to include all of Simcoe County.
“We’re running open tryouts to capture other talented players from the Simcoe area.”
Two players from Bradford are already expected at the tryouts.
He’s hoping that Georgian College can be the team’s home base but has insurance and logistic details to work out before that can happen. In the meantime, he’s focusing on forming the team.
Fifteen players will make the team with players required to be 17 years of age or older. Tryouts will be held Nov. 13 at Barrie North Collegiate at 2 p.m.
There is no cost to try out. For more information, visit www.barriefutsal.ca.
