St Matt’s crowned state futsal champions

15 Aug, 2011

The St Matthew's Central School under 10s boys’ and girls’ teams took on the state last week during the Football NSW Futsal School State Championships in Penrith.
The girls made it all the way to the semi finals to eventually finish equal third, while the boys went two better to be crowned State Champions.

The boys’ competition featured the top 24 teams from around the state, but the other 23 sides proved no match for the Mudgee boys, as they beat Terrigal’s Our Lady of the Sea 4-3 in a thrilling final.

Mudgee’s boys progressed through their group undefeated after three convincing victories – 2-1, 3-0 and 4-2 – early on.

Next up was the quarter-final stage, and again the nerves didn’t get the better of the youngsters, as they won in a 4-0 whitewash.

The semi-final match was almost as simple for the boys after they cruised to the grand final with a 4-2 win, before their pulsating final victory.

The girls made an equally impressive start to their campaign, as they too went through the group stage unbeaten.

That run of results sent them straight through to the semi finals, where they were edged out 1-0.

Despite the disappointment, the girls still managed to snatch equal third to round out a successful day for St Matthew’s.

“The children were just fantastic,” St Matthew’s futsal coach Barry Neaverson-Smith said. “They played hard, stayed focused and were very well behaved.

“They represented St Matthew’s like true champions.”

But Neaverson-Smith was especially pleased with the newly crowned state champions.

“For the boys to become state champions is just unbelievable,” he said. “We are very proud of our students and their wonderful achievement.”
