The New Straits TimesStudents and teachers slug it out on turf03/08/2011by
K. KandiahGEORGE TOWN: Students prevailed over their teachers in the Tenby International School futsal competition at the Soccer Experience Football Centre in Jalan Kelawai here recently.
In the men's event, the teachers had a good start by scoring first but a few minutes later the students drew level and then took the lead while adding two more goals before the teachers reduced the deficit.
The students continued to go on the offensive to increase the score, eventually winning 4-2.
Then it was the women's turn to take to the turf. The aggressive students were all over the court but did not make use of the opportunities to score.
And three minutes into the second half, the girls found the net but kept the score down. Probably they did not want to embarrass their teachers.
The school's head of physical education, C. Raj Ganesh, said the event was organised to build a closer rapport between the teachers and the students.
He said the event was held just before the school closed for a one-month holiday.
Tenby International School principal Giles Montier was happy to see the students and their teachers playing together in friendly rivalry.
"They played well, breaking the ice with both the teachers and the students wanting to win.
"The lady teachers were too timid to run after the ball, but I really appreciate the girls.
"The students were really aggressive but they held back and did not score many goals.
"I am also happy that this was the first time the girls were coming out to play in games, and I hope that it will be the beginning of their participation in more events to come," he said.
Montier said the school, which was established in 2007, aims to develop the students not only in the classroom but also in outside activities, especially sports.
The school has started to participate in badminton, basketball, netball, swimming and wushu competitions among the international schools and national schools.
He said Tenby International School will soon be moving into its own campus in Batu Ferringhi with many sporting facilities, including an Olympic sized swimming pool, a football field and an indoor games court.
"We intend to introduce sports and recreational activities as a regular feature in the school's calendar and probably later make it compulsory for students and teachers.
"The school looks to promote a healthy lifestyle and teach children life skills, including respecting diversity, integrity, teamwork, and sportsmanship."
Montier said he was also planning to get the parents involved in their children's outdoor activities.
