Futsal brings hundreds to Marrickville

6 May 11

by Mark Gertskis

Hundreds of students from dozens of schools and five different age groups converged on Marrickville this week for the annual schools futsal championships.

The Debbie and Abbey Borgia Community Recreation Centre hosted 101 teams of boys and girls from as far as Clovelly and Kogarah in a week-long celebration of the indoor form of soccer.

Homebush Boys High School under-19s will head to the state championships in July after beating Belmore High School 5-2 in the final.

They will be joined by Summer Hill’s Trinity Grammar under-10s boys, who beat Moriah College 2-1 to take out the regional title in their age group.

Homebush Boys player Harry Marsdon, 15, has played the outdoor form of soccer since he was five years old but he preferred futsal because it was “more confrontational”.

“I’m a defender now and I like to get stuck in,” he said.

“It’s a smaller area and easier to defend.”

He said futsal was much harder physically.

“You need more agility and stamina,” Harry said.
