LG 1 edge rivals to win Futsal League

LG Pompidou Footie 1 left it late in the Stadia 5-organised Youth Futsal League to clinch the title on the final day of competition with a superb 9-4 victory over Catalonia.

The win gave Footie 1 an identical 13-6 win-loss record as their main title rivals Catalonia, and the title was decided on the basis of points average per match, where the winners edged it at 2.05 to the runners-up’s 2.

LG Pompidou 2 finished third with nine wins and six defeats and a points average of 1.42. Faris Al Mudaffer of organisers Stadia 5 said futsal was drawing a lot of interest from local teams, with the obvious question of ‘when’s the next tournament?’ popping up all the time.

“The feedback has been good to the game. The teams have enjoyed participating, and our leagues are well received by the players,” Al Mudaffer said.

“It is a game of football with a different twist, that being an indoor five-a-side format. The level of competition is improving, but is still at a grassroots level. That’s why we are hoping to introduce a Futsal Academy in the future. There is a lack of affordable facilities too, which would promote the game, as it is a different format of the beautiful game.”

Speaking of Stadia 5’s next tournament, Al Mudaffer added: “Our next event which we are most excited about is the Howdra/Invicta Junior tournament to be held at Mirdif City Center.

“The tournament is for the Under-7 and 9’s divisions on June 17 and all entries are free as we want to promote Futsal to the younger generation.

“Stadia5 is also working with a mandate given by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), Government of Dubai to have a full Futsal program in public schools, which will include a full league for girls and boys.

“A total of 144 teams are expected to participate once a sponsor is secured for the entire program. This is a Princess Haya initiative, and further announcements will be made once the program is in place.”
