19/11/2006 Welsh Futsal League Cup The Inaugural Welsh Invitation Futsal Cup The first official open age Welsh Futsal Competition is to be held at the Deeside Leisure Centre in Queensferry between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Sunday, 19th November. Futsal is a very different form of indoor football compared to traditional Welsh five a side, but during the last ten years it has become the world format for five a side soccer. This is reflected by the staging of the F.I.F.A. World Futsal Cup (which in 2004 attracted entries from over 100 nations), the UEFA Futsal Cup, etc., and the introduction of professional Futsal Leagues in various parts of the world. The aim of the Welsh Futsal Association, under the auspices of the Futsal Association of Wales, is to introduce this attractive new sport to the Principality, and November’s tournament in Queensferry is the first step. The U.K. as a whole has been a little late in discovering the merits of this quick, highly skilled form of indoor soccer, but that is about to change in a big way. Futsal matches permit only limited physical contact, and so is seen as a game that is suitable for all players, be they young or old, male or female; however, don’t think that it’s a “soft” game….. The pace and skills displayed on pitches than can be over 800 metres square produce outstanding entertainment, and the demands of the game (where matches can last up to an hour) are such that twelve players per Team are allowed…..and needed! The Welsh Invitation Futsal Cup is being sponsored by Zomp Internet Solutions; the presentation of the trophies will be made by Mr. Trefor Lloyd-Hughes of the F.A.W Five teams from around Wales will battle it out for the title on a “round robin” league basis, and the day will include an exhibition match between two junior clubs to introduce Futsal to the young. This Competition is to be followed in December by the first season for the new Welsh Futsal League, which will comprise three Regional Conferences, whose winners will meet in the New Year to contest the National Finals. The National Champions will be eligible to represent Wales in the 2007/2008 UEFA Futsal Cup.
